SoCalGas Tankless Water Heater Rebates in 2026

Rebates for high-efficiency water heaters do exist in Southern California, and they change: amounts, qualifying equipment lists and deadlines are revised, and programs open and close. For that reason we do not publish figures here. What does not change often is the structure of what qualifies, and that is what is worth understanding before you shop.

Check the current program at the source

The utility publishes the live list of qualifying models and current amounts on its own site, and that is the only figure worth acting on. A rebate amount quoted in a contractor's blog post is a snapshot of whatever was true when it was written, which is precisely why so many of them are wrong.

What generally decides eligibility

Three things, consistently. The equipment: efficiency ratings above a stated threshold, from a published list of qualifying models. The installation: permitted, code-compliant, and usually performed by a licensed contractor. And the paperwork: a dated invoice showing the model and the installation address, submitted inside a window after the install.

The permit is not a detail

Programs generally require the work to have been permitted, and a water heater replacement in Orange County is permitted work regardless. An unpermitted swap can disqualify a claim, and it surfaces again later at sale. We pull the permit and close it as standard, which keeps that door open whether or not you claim anything.

Keep the paperwork from day one

Keep the invoice with the model and serial numbers, the permit number, and photographs of the data plate before the unit is boxed in. Claims are refused far more often for missing documentation than for ineligible equipment, and reconstructing it months later is unpleasant.

Do not let the rebate choose the heater

The right unit is the one sized for your peak hour and matched to your gas supply and vent path. If a qualifying model also happens to be the right one, take the rebate. Sizing a house around an incentive is how people end up with a unit that disappoints every January, long after the rebate has been spent.

What we do

We size the unit, install it permitted and to code, and give you the invoice and documentation you need to make a claim. We do not administer rebates and we will not quote an amount; the utility does both, and their number is the only one that is current.

The install date is the date that counts

Programs run on installation date, not purchase date, and the claim window starts from it. If a unit sits in a garage for three weeks before it goes in, that is three weeks off the window. Book the install and the claim together rather than treating the paperwork as something to get to later.
