5 Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Repair

Five things tell you a sewer line needs repair rather than another cleaning: more than one fixture draining slowly at once, a gurgle from a toilet when a shower or washing machine drains, sewage smell in the yard or the lowest drain in the house, patches of grass that are greener and wetter than the rest of the lawn, and backups that return on a predictable cycle no matter how often the line is snaked.

Why more than one fixture matters

A single slow drain is almost always a local problem: hair in the shower trap, grease in the kitchen branch. When the tub, the toilet and the washing machine all slow down together, the fault has moved downstream to the line they share. That line is the sewer lateral, and it is the homeowner's responsibility from the house to the city main in most Orange County cities, including the length under the sidewalk.

The gurgle is air, and air means a blockage

Drains work because air can move as fast as water. When a lateral is partly blocked, draining one fixture pulls air through the trap of another, and you hear it. A toilet that burps when the washing machine empties is not a toilet fault at all. It is the line telling you it has lost bore.

What is usually causing it here

In the older inland tracts (Anaheim, Santa Ana, parts of Fullerton and Orange) laterals are often clay, laid in short sections with joints every few feet. Roots find those joints, and once they are inside, the line collects everything that passes. In post-1970s construction the line is more often ABS, which does not attract roots but does sag when the bedding under it settles, creating a low spot that holds water and solids.

Why repeated snaking is the expensive option

Snaking cuts a channel through whatever is in the pipe and restores flow the same day. It does not remove roots at the joint, it does not lift a sagging section, and it does not restore lost bore in a corroded line. If the same lateral has been cleared more than twice, each further visit is buying weeks, and the total spent on visits eventually passes the cost of fixing the cause.

What we do before recommending anything

A camera goes down the line from the cleanout and the footage is yours to keep. Roots at a joint, a belly holding water, a collapsed section and a line that is simply full all look identical from the top of the cleanout and completely different on screen. Nobody should be quoting a trenchless repair or an excavation without that footage, and we will not.

When to stop reading and call
