Water Line Repair: Main Service Line Leaks Explained

The water service line runs from the meter at the street to the house, and it is the property owner's responsibility on the private side of the meter. When it leaks it usually announces itself outside rather than in: a soft or sunken patch of ground, grass greener along one line, water at the kerb, or pressure dropping in the house.

Confirm it is yours before you dig

The utility owns the main and generally the meter; you own the line from the meter to the house. If water is surfacing on the street side of the meter box, that is a call to the utility rather than to us. If the meter's low-flow indicator is moving with the house shut off at its own valve, the leak is on your line.

Why these lines fail here

Age and material. Older Orange County properties often have galvanized service lines that corrode from the inside and eventually perforate. Copper fails at bends and where it passes through anything abrasive. Polybutylene, installed in some late-century construction, fails at fittings and is generally replaced rather than repaired.

Repair or replace the run

A single pinhole in an otherwise sound copper line can be repaired. A galvanized line that has failed once will fail again, because the corrosion is along its length rather than at a point, and repairing it is buying months. A camera cannot be used here as it can on a sewer, so age and material carry the decision.

Trenchless options exist for supply too

A new line can often be pulled or bored along the existing path rather than trenched across the yard, which matters when the run passes under a driveway, mature planting or hardscape. It needs a pit at each end rather than an open cut, and on most Orange County front gardens that is the difference that decides the total.

While you wait

If the leak is significant, shut the house off at its own valve rather than at the meter if you can, so the utility's equipment is left alone. Keep the wet area clear, and photograph it. The extent of ground saturation is easier to document before the repair than after.

Permits and the sidewalk

Replacing a service line is permitted work, and where the run passes under a public sidewalk or kerb the city has its own requirements for restoration. We pull the permit and close it. Skipping that is how a repair becomes a code issue at the next sale.
