Outdoor & Yard Drain Cleaning: Catch Basins, French Drains, and Area Drains

Yard drainage is a separate system from the sewer, and it fails differently. Catch basins, area drains and French drains carry rainwater and irrigation runoff away from the house, and they silt up, which nobody notices until the first real storm puts water against the foundation.

Catch basins fill from the bottom

A catch basin is a box under a grate with an outlet part-way up the side, so silt settles below the outlet instead of travelling down the line. That is the design. It also means the box needs emptying, and a basin that has never been cleared may be full to the outlet with sediment, leaves and mulch.

Area drains and what blocks them

The small grates in a side yard or patio feed narrow pipe, and narrow pipe blocks with leaf litter, bark mulch and the fine silt that washes off planting beds. In an Orange County side yard between two houses, where the run is long and the fall is shallow, that happens faster than owners expect.

French drains are the ones you cannot clear

A French drain is perforated pipe in gravel wrapped in filter fabric. When it fails, it is usually because the fabric has blinded with fine silt or roots have entered the perforations, and no amount of jetting restores that; the surrounding gravel and fabric are the filter, and they are what has clogged. Replacement is often the honest answer.

Why it matters more than it looks

Yard drainage that backs up puts standing water against the foundation and, in homes with a crawlspace, under the house. That is a moisture and settlement problem rather than a plumbing inconvenience, and it is why clearing the system before the rainy season is worth doing on a dry afternoon in autumn.

What clearing actually involves

Lifting the grates and emptying the basins by hand first, since jetting a full basin just moves silt into the line. Then jetting the runs from basin to outlet, and confirming flow at the discharge point, which in many properties is a curb outlet at the street that has itself silted closed.

Do not connect it to the sewer

Rainwater into the sanitary sewer is not permitted, and it overloads a system sized for waste. If a previous owner has tied a yard drain into the sewer line, that is worth knowing about and worth correcting.

Where the water is supposed to end up

Follow the system to its discharge. Most Orange County properties outlet at the curb through a hole in the kerb face, and those silt closed from the street side without anyone noticing. A system that is clear all the way to a blocked outlet backs up exactly as if it were blocked at the grate, and the outlet is the easiest part of the whole run to check.
