Kitchen Sink Won't Drain: DIY Steps Before Calling a Plumber

Start with the trap under the sink, not with a chemical. A kitchen clog is grease and food building on the pipe wall, and it almost always sits within the first few feet: in the P-trap itself or the horizontal arm behind it. Put a bucket underneath, unscrew the two slip nuts by hand, and look.

Why boiling water and plunging come first

If the sink still drains slowly rather than not at all, very hot water plus dish soap down the drain will soften a fresh grease film. Follow with a flat-bottomed sink plunger over the drain; block the second bowl and the dishwasher air gap first, or the pressure escapes there instead of going down the line.

The trap, and what you will find in it

Congealed grease with coffee grounds and food fragments held in it. Clean it out completely, check the washers seat properly, and hand-tighten only. Slip nuts crack when they meet a wrench. If the trap is clear and water still backs up, the blockage is further along and a small hand auger fed into the wall arm is the next step.

Leave the chemicals alone

Caustic drain openers generate heat sitting on a blockage they cannot clear, and in an older kitchen with cast-iron or thin-wall ABS that heat does real damage. Worse, they leave a caustic pool that anyone opening the trap afterwards has to deal with, including whoever you call.

When it is not the kitchen at all

If the dishwasher backs up into the sink, the disposal gurgles when the machine drains, or a downstairs fixture slows at the same time, the fault has moved past the branch into the line those fixtures share. At that point plunging pushes the problem along rather than out.

Why it comes back in Orange County kitchens

Grease is the whole story. It leaves the pan as a liquid and cools inside a pipe run that is often long and shallow in single-storey tract homes, lining the wall a little more each week until the bore closes. Snaking punches a channel through that lining; hydro jetting takes the wall back to the pipe. If the same sink has been cleared more than twice, the second is what it needs.

When to call
